Blog 51 - New Year, New Goals

Well... its here. 2010. It seemed like just yesterday I was graduating from high school (2003). Last year was quite a year for me; Oxford, Internship, PHR, etc... but 2010 is promising to be bigger still. But there’s no time to think back about past accomplishments, if I’m going to hit my goals for this year it’s time to get to work!

A tradition that most of us have every New Year’s to to state our “New Year’s Resolutions” about what we want to accomplish in the upcoming year. I will give you my list of New Year’s Resolutions about what I would like to achieve this year. This list is in no particular order by the way...

  1. Graduate with my MBA in April. I am definitely on the home stretch of my MBA now with only a single semester left. It is crazy to think that 14 weeks from now I will have completed my MBA.
  2. Learn Spanish. With my future international career getting closer by the day, I need to expand my horizons and learn a new language. Learning Spanish will help prepare me for a potential future position in Spain or in South America. I have purchased Rosetta Stone and will try to complete a Spanish lesson every day. Now if I could only learn to roll those R’s!!
  3. Read More. Being an MBA student requires a vast amount of reading. This session I should be able to find time for some non-school related reading. I have purchased a handful of books and hope to read at least one a month. If I read one that is exceptional I will write a blog-review about it.
  4. Be Accepted into My Second Graduate Program. I have applied to 4 different master’s programs in the field of human resources and I am awaiting their confirmations. While everything is submitted and the work has been done, I can now only wait for what I hope will be my acceptances.
  5. Work Out More. The tried and true New Year’s Resolution. When I work out on a daily basis, I feel better about everything.
  6. Help My Sister Get Into Grad School. My sister has a lot of work ahead of her in the next year if she is going to get into graduate school. Studying for the GRE, a summer internship, researching programs, finding recommenders, writing essays, etc... all in addition to her normal coursework. I know the profound positive effect that graduate school can have on someone’s life and I hope to be able to help give my sister the graduate school experience.
  7. Have a Positive Outlook. This is one of the most exciting times in my life. There is an incredible amount of uncertainty. Where I will go to school, where I will work or even what country I will live in are all up in the air right now. Maintaining a positive outlook and not worrying about things outside of my control will be very important to me in 2010. 2010 will present a vast number of both opportunities and challenges to me. I need to be able to take all of them on with a good attitude and be prepared to make smart decisions.

Well I think that sums up my major New Year’s Resolutions. I’ll try to keep you all updated on my progress on all of the goals. Hope 2009 was great for all of you and that you are all looking forward to a great 2010!!
